White House Announces Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark
The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.
While the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS representative noted that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.
Union Response and Legal Challenges
Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in court.
This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.
The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute
Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.
At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.
“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Last week, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any government staff had been recalled to execute staff reductions.
An analysis argued that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the administration to carry out firings, referencing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.
Consequences for Employees
These terminations took place on the very day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the end of September but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.
Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.
“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
