Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
