Thousands Experiencing Power in South-East Queensland and Victoria Following Severe Storms

Approximately twenty-five thousand homes in Queensland's southeast were left without power on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms impacted the area, generating powerful gusts hitting 109 kilometers per hour.

Substantial Hailstones and Extensive Damage

Locals reported giant hailstones reaching sizes of 7cm in certain regions. Meteorological experts confirmed that multiple regions across Queensland had been hit with substantial ice precipitation.

Emergency crews were attempting to repair electricity service throughout the affected regions, with nearly 70 crews activated to manage the widespread outages.

Victorian Climate Difficulties

Simultaneously, approximately 1,000 energy customers in Victoria also faced power outages after the capital city recorded its most precipitation in a year and a half.

Emergency response teams received over five hundred calls for help across the region, mostly for building damage but also for downed trees and water accumulation.

  • The Werribee area - experienced significant destruction
  • Hoppers Crossing - multiple emergency calls
  • Wyndham area - 179 calls for assistance

At the height on Sunday, in excess of 28k electricity consumers in the state were without power.

Weather Forecast

Humid circumstances were expected to linger along significant areas of the state's eastern regions this coming days as a low-pressure trough continued to draw in moisture against the coast.

The following day was expected to become the wettest day, with persistent thunderstorm potential expected across different parts of both states.

Medical Alert

Health officials warned that there was an increased chance of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the northern rural areas, specifically given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This alert comes after past events where comparable situations led to substantial respiratory problems in the state.
