Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
