Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a diverse cast of personalities, and a exciting storyline showcasing celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces increasing in strength within the urban setting.

Warning: Spoilers for the latest installment of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

Episode 3 ended with a major cliffhanger and revealed the initial group of characters who will branch out from the primary party to embark on their independent quest, distinct from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team consists of Teor (portrayed by the voice actor), Thimble (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney), the cleric (the player), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

The Reason for Division

With 13 cast members, it was obvious from the outset that having everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

That’s why, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, intertwining the individual narratives before branching into three distinct groups: Fighters, Planners, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

As described by the DM, the combat-focused party is for players who enjoy a classically intense fight-heavy story mode where peaceful solutions are scarce.

Initially, characters like the squeamish cleric the cleric might look mismatched, but the events of the third episode show why these five characters are ideally matched for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the group understands precisely where to go next after a intense first encounter with the enemy group.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose demise kicked off the story’s plot—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, invading the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and swiping all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The antagonist then paid off his debts and escaped to a secure base in the remote area, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each adventurer has a individual motive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, seeks revenge.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the region and advises that it is a hostile place.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having defied his house’s orders to eliminate the fighter and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could help the group enter areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, Teor pledged a eternal obligation to The cleric for his rescue and will now follow him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are hunted by the rulers that govern Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally too risky:

  • The rogue and The character are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The healer defied the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This means them no alternative but to journey toward the remote area in quest for the traitor.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s Cooldown, we discover that the warrior group will not appear next week, leaving the other eight cast members to form the Explorers and Schemers tables.

Fans can anticipate finding out which players will be where in the season’s last Overture episode, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
