Crew Member Reveals Depression After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had come out of the mission, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
