A Moving Occasion when Liam Rosenior Transcends Barriers

"He is a top tactician that understands the game back to front, which is the crucial factor.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's pioneering black footballer, it would be dishonest if I said this news fails to move me."

These were the words expressed by Paul Canoville, the man who made his groundbreaking first appearance for the Blues' first team off the bench in April 1982.

On Tuesday, the club hired RC Strasbourg boss Rosenior, aged 41, as their new manager after the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of a multi-club BlueCo which also controls the London club.

There have been a mere twelve black head coaches – excluding those holding temporary caretaker roles – in the Premier League since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is that he grew up and played not far from here, he understands this area," added Canoville.

"Whenever children observe someone like Liam managing their club, a person who looks like them, from a similar background, who comes from a family that champions equality… it is impactful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents a massive moment for the club, for London, for all young person dreaming big.

"But right now? Let's back Liam, provide him with what he needs, and allow him to do his work."

What Exactly Do the Numbers Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager back in the nineties and became the Premier League's inaugural black head coach.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince became the first black English boss in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other current Premier League gaffer of colour.

The lack of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game is matched by a lack of representation at executive level.

According to a Black Footballers Partnership 2023's study, forty-three percent of top-flight players come from black heritage.

However, research by the equality organization found only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic communities.

At senior coaching level, based on figures provided by eleven clubs, the percentage is two percent.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of him being announced as the Chelsea head coach, and we hope to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of ability that exists within ethnic minority communities... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do. We need to persist in striving to break those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee will become the fourth permanent English head coaches presently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which trails Europe's remaining major divisions in terms of homegrown managers.

16 of the 20 first division managers in Serie A are from Italy, Eleven in La Liga in Spain, Twelve in the Bundesliga in Germany and 10 in Ligue 1 in France.

Current Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt all young English managers with a youth development pedigree will be, to some degree no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It's really motivating to up-and-coming British academy coaches to see someone get that job with his background and we hope he will be highly successful."

'Let's not forget – he's there on merit'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career peaked with a brief spell in charge of then-League One side Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded an MBE in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered in combating discrimination in football and beyond.

After Liam hung up his boots he followed a path in management. He began writing a column for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the under-representation among managers. He pointed out that race does not influence ability arguing that roles must be awarded on merit.

He also made the view he would repeat: that vast lack of diversity results in a failure to understand regarding footballers with diverse ethnic and cultural heritage.

During an interview for a football podcast, he explained the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" or "passionate", but said he could relate to the Dutch international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from Strasbourg to Chelsea in July.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "ashamed" upon hearing an unnamed coach make a discriminatory remark. He pledged his support for the Rainbow Laces initiative and authored an open letter to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" racism.

He has subsequently built his reputation in the dugout – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal at Chelsea.

The Blues boasted the Premier League's first African heritage manager with Gullit as well as the first black captain in Paul Elliott.
